Industrial water filtration: different needs

Industry requires industrial water filtration at different stages of the process and for different needs. This means that the technical solutions for industrial water filtration differ, and the processes used can vary. But whether for rainwater filtration, water potabilization, pumping from water tables, lakes or rivers, or closed circuit filtration of process water, Hectron solutions offer a suitable and adaptable response that is easy to implement and economically compatible.

The diverse needs of industrial water filtration

When it comes to industry, water filtration needs can be numerous. They correspond either to different stages in the process, or to different uses of water in the process. Nevertheless, we can distinguish 3 main families of needs, even if some industries may have requirements that are difficult to classify in these broad categories:

  • Closed-cycle safety filtration: this involves removing undesirable particles from the water, whether it is used directly or indirectly in the process.
  • Process filtration: the aim here is to eliminate poorly dispersed contaminants and particles found in water used directly in the process.
  • Filtration prior to discharge: the aim here is to bring discharged water into compliance, and in particular to eliminate certain solid particles that reside in the water prior to treatment.

Which industrial filtration for which type of water?

The technical requirements for industrial water filtration vary according to the type of water used. Clearly, filtration requirements will differ depending on whether the water is used for washing, for example, or for cooling or pumping.

Washing water

Technical requirements for water used for washing vary from one industry to another. Some machines require high levels of water cleanliness, with filtration levels close to 50 microns, while other, more robust machines will be satisfied with water filtered to 200 microns.

The destination of the wash water also has an impact on the filtration required: depending on whether the water is destined for recycling and reuse, or is discharged as is or sent to a treatment plant, the filtration level will also differ. But, overall, the thresholds are between 50 and 200 microns, and are amply satisfied by the entire range of Hectron automatic filters.

Closed circuit water

In the case of industrial closed-circuit water filtration, the aim is to keep the water clean. This is essentially to protect the pumps (which become damaged and clogged with contaminated water). The filtration thresholds required are quite variable, but can range from 25 to 100 microns. In such cases, Hectron’s automatic filtration systems are perfectly suited to achieving these levels of cleanliness.

Recycled water used as process water

This type of water is often filtered upstream, and only requires additional filtration before being recycled. The filtration levels required may vary, but are all below 500 microns. Depending on the type of industrial process, however, requirements can reach filtration levels of 15 microns. These filtration ranges are all easily achievable thanks to Hectron products, which are frequently used in process water filtration.

Pumping water

Pumping water can require very different levels of filtration. Indeed, pumped water can be of different types and contain highly variable levels of pollutants. In general, pumped water requires the widest possible filtration range. It’s not uncommon to have to filter pumping water down to 5 microns. However, it is sometimes only necessary to filter to 1500 microns when the final destination of this water does not require more extensive filtration. In all cases, Hectron filtration systems offer filtration ranges that are largely compatible with what is required for pumped water destined for industrial use.
